Breast Reduction

What is a Breast Reduction?

Breast Reduction surgery, also known as Reduction Mammoplasty, is a procedure that involves the removal of breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce breast size. This surgery is suitable for patients who experience physical discomfort due to larger breasts, such as back, neck, or shoulder pain, as well as difficulties with movement or daily activities. Breast Reduction surgery is performed to alter breast size and shape, addressing both functional concerns and anatomical factors related to excessive breast volume. While some patients seek the procedure to alleviate physical discomfort, others may choose it for aesthetic reasons to achieve a breast size that aligns with their preferences.

Patients may also choose breast reduction to address concerns such as skin irritation or rashes under the breast fold, which can occur due to prolonged skin contact in this area. The procedure alters breast size and shape to reduce excess tissue, which may assist in minimising friction-related irritation.

The procedure involves the removal of excess tissue through planned incisions. In most cases, the nipple and areola may be repositioned to align with the new breast shape. The remaining tissue is reshaped to achieve a smaller and more proportionate structure. Reducing excess breast weight can help alleviate physical strain and allow for a more manageable breast size in relation to the patient’s frame.

Breast Reduction Technique

The traditional Breast Reduction method involves making incisions around the areola, vertically down to the breast fold, and commonly horizontally along the breast crease. This can be referred to as an anchor scar. This approach allows for the removal of breast tissue, fat, and skin, making it suitable for patients requiring a significant reduction in breast size. It also allows for reshaping the breast structure and repositioning the nipple to align with the new breast proportions.

This method can also address differences in breast size or shape by allowing adjustments to achieve symmetry. Scars will be present along the incision lines, with their appearance varying based on individual healing. As this technique involves more extensive tissue removal, the recovery process may take time.

Aftercare and Recovery

Following Breast Reduction surgery, patients will typically experience swelling, bruising, and some discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication. Patients are advised to wear a surgical bra or compression garment to support the newly shaped breasts and reduce swelling. Most patients are able to return to light activities within a week or two, although strenuous physical activity should be avoided for at least 4-6 weeks to allow for proper healing.

Patients will also need to attend follow-up appointments to monitor their recovery and ensure that there are no complications. During this time, it is essential to take good care of the incision sites to reduce the risk of infection and ensure proper healing. Swelling and discomfort will gradually subside, and the breasts will begin to settle into their final shape over the course of many weeks. The final results of the surgery may take several months to become more noticeable, and patients should continue to follow post-operative instructions to ensure proper recovery.

Risks

As with any surgery, breast reduction surgery carries certain risks. These include:

It is important to discuss these risks with Dr Maree Kekeff during the consultation to ensure patients have a clear understanding of the procedure. Every surgical procedure carries potential risks, and understanding these possibilities allows patients to make an informed decision based on accurate information.
